Putney Lower Common - Wimbledon and Putney Commons

Putney Lower Common

Located approximately ½ mile west of Putney town centre, Putney Lower Common is separated from the main body of the Commons by a distance of just over a mile.

The main part of the Common is bounded to the east by a new school and apartments and then merges seamlessly into Barnes Common to the west. The area’s broad grass meadows and cricket pitch have managed to retain a village green character which is very much in contrast to many other parts of the Commons.

The area lies on London Clay and during the spring the meadows are adorned with cow parsley. To the north is a riverside walk that leads out onto the Thames Towpath.

To reach Putney Lower Common from Roehampton the shortest way is via Putney Park Lane, an unmade thoroughfare starting at the northern edge of Putney Heath.

Tennis Courts

We are currently in negotiations with our preferred provider, who will be responsible for operating the courts once they reopen. The process is taking longer than anticipated due to the significant refurbishment required to bring the courts up to standard.

Earlier this winter, we commissioned a specialist consultancy to assess the condition of the courts and the wider facility. Their findings were clear: two courts are in extremely poor condition and unplayable, while the remaining three are also below acceptable standards. Additionally, all net post holes have been cemented in, making every court unusable in their current state.

This level of deterioration was unexpected. The cost of refurbishing all five courts is substantial, and contractor availability is limited during this peak season, which has added further delays.

Despite these challenges, we remain fully committed to reopening the courts as a high-quality community tennis facility. However, we are unable to provide a definitive timeline until contracts are signed with both the provider and the refurbishment contractors.

We appreciate your continued patience and understanding. At this stage, changing direction is not an option—we’re focused on delivering a long-term solution that meets the needs of the community.

Putney Lower Common Orchard

A new orchard has been created on Putney Lower Common over winter 2023. Twelve new fruit trees of different varieties have been planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy and will serve as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s extraordinary service. The Orchard on Putney Lower Common will be added to the Queens Green Canopy digital map.

The idea to take part in the tree planting initiative was suggested by members of the local community and from there it grew into an orchard. The orchard has been fundraised for by visitors and neighbours of the Common, including residents of the Henry Chester building and congregation members from the Parish of Putney. Thank you so much to everyone who has made a donation - we are so grateful for your support for this special project.

Three cherry trees, three pear trees and six apple trees form the orchard and the trees have been carefully chosen so that they establish and then thrive in the soil conditions. Beautiful in blossom, the orchard will bring colour in spring and autumn alongside food and habitat for wildlife.
