Guardian photographer and film-maker Sean Smith has won the Royal Television Society award for best international news for his work Iraq: Apache Company - the first time a newspaper has won such an award.
The piece, which was made by GuardianFilms and Channel 4 News ITN, was up against Undercover In Zimbabwe (Newsnight BBC for BBC Two) and Afghanistan: Taliban Embed (Al Jazeera English News Hour, Al Jazeera English).
The film was described by the judges as "raw, brave, atmospheric and profoundly memorable. An important story very powerfully realised".
Smith spent eight weeks with the US military's Apache Company and filmed them as they went on daily routine investigations.
