Jared L. Loughner, the suspect in the shooting, writes on his MySpace page, “Goodbye. Dear friends ... Please don’t be mad at me.”

About 10 AM

Representative Gabrielle Giffords arrives in the La Toscana Village parking lot, parks her S.U.V., and tweets, “My 1st Congress on Your Corner starts now.”

10:11 AM

Law enforcement officials and witnesses gave the following account: a man wearing a sweatshirt and sunglasses barges past people waiting to talk to Ms. Giffords. He walks up behind her, shoots her in the head, and then continues shooting.

 

Among the 20 people shot, six are killed. The man starts to reload, but the cartridge jams and two bystanders wrestle the gunman to the ground, holding him until the police arrive.

10:14 AM

After a flood of 911 calls, 22 responders are on the scene and set up just south of the location to make sure that all is clear.

10:22 AM

Emergency medical personnel are cleared to go in. They immediately identify five dead and seven critically injured, including Ms. Giffords.

Before the shooting

August 2007Mr. Loughner attends a “Congress on Your Corner” meet-and-greet event held by Ms. Giffords. He reportedly tells a classmate that Ms. Giffords is “stupid and unintelligent.”

March 2010After approval of the health care law, which Ms. Giffords supported, the windows of her office in Tucson are broken or shot out in an act of vandalism.

SeptemberPima Community College suspends Mr. Loughner for several incidents. The college says he will be readmitted only if he gets psychological counseling.

OctoberMr. Loughner drops out of Pima Community College.

Nov. 2Ms. Giffords narrowly wins re-election to a third term against Jesse Kelly, a Republican who is a former Marine sergeant and a Tea Party favorite.

Nov. 30Mr. Loughner buys a Glock semi-automatic pistol.

Dec. 15Mr. Loughner posts a rambling video on YouTube.

Jan. 8, 2011A gunman shoots Ms. Giffords and 19 other people. Six people die. The police raid Mr. Loughner’s home and say they find notes from him saying, “I planned ahead,” “My assassination,” and “Giffords.”
