Princeton Falls in an N.C.A.A. LowIn the lowest-scoring Division I game since the introduction of the 3-point line, Monmouth beat host Princeton, 41-21, last night.
Princeton tied the record for fewest points in a Division I game since the 3-point line was instituted in 1986-87. Georgia Southern had 21 in a 40-point loss to Coastal Carolina on Jan. 2, 1997.
"Obviously, we just couldn't score," Princeton Coach Joe Scott said. "The zone gave us tons of problems."
The previous record for fewest combined points since 1986-87 was 67, which happened twice.
Princeton's previous scoring low in the era of the 3-point line was 35 points.
The Tigers (2-5) had their lowest point total since a 44-21 loss to Penn in 1935-36.
Princeton went scoreless for a stretch of 14 minutes 54 seconds in the second half after going 7:14 without a point in the first half.
Patrick Ekeruo had 9 points to lead Princeton, which shot 9 for 41 from the field. Monmouth (2-7) snapped a six-game losing streak.
HOFSTRA 73, STONY BROOK 56 -- Loren Stokes became Hofstra's 26th 1,000-point scorer, scoring 29 points and shooting 11 of 14 in the Pride's victory over visiting Stony Brook. Zygis Sestokas added 10 points for Hofstra (5-2).
HARVARD 91, LONG ISLAND 79 -- Matt Stehle scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Harvard had a 20-4 run midway through the second half against visiting Long Island University. James Williams paced the Blackbirds (2-4) with 18 points.
FORDHAM 95, FAIRFIELD 80 -- Marcus Stout scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the first half to lead visiting Fordham past Fairfield. Fordham (3-6) turned a 2-point deficit into a commanding lead with a 21-0 run in the first half.
