Sidewheel River Steamer:
Built in 1852 as the sidewheel river steamer Ed Howard at New Albany, IN.
Purchased by Confederacy in 1861 at New Orleans for $8,000
Converted for military service as a timber clad river gunboat
Commissioned, CSS General Polk, 20 April 1862, LT. J. H. Carter, CSN in command
CSS General Polk was assigned to Flag Officer George N. Hollins Louisiana defense fleet
Flag Officer Hollins moved his fleet up th Mississippi River in support of Army operations near New Madrid, MO.
After the fall on Island NO. 10 CSS General Polk escaped 75 miles up the Yazoo River where she was burned, 26 June 1862, to prevent capture by Union forces Specifications:
