Half Brig:
Built as the half brig Coquette in 1857 at Baltimore, MD. for J. Crosby
CS Florida, 6 May 1863. CDR. J. N. Maffitt, CSN in command
Renamed Clarence the half brig was placed under the command LT. Charles William Read, CSN, with 20 men as a prize crew
LT. Read planed to sail Clarence into Hampton Roads, VA., destroy or capture a Federal gunboat and burn Union merchant vessels congregated at Fortress Monroe
En route to Virginia, Clarence captured bark Windward, also known as Whistling Wind, 6 June 1863
On 7 June she captured schooner Alfred H. Partridge
On 9 June Clarence captured brig Mary Alvina
Finding entrance to Hampton Roads restricted LT Read decided that his original plan would be impossible
On 12 June Clarence captured the bark Tacony, and schooner M. A. Shindler
Read planned to transferred his force to Tacony, a better sailer than Clarence
Clarence took on last prize schooner Kate Stewart before Read ordered Clarence burned
LT. Read and his crew continued on Tacony to harass Union commerce along the Atlantic coast Specifications:
