Screw Steamer:
  • Built as the steamer Sunflower, date and location unknown
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Purchased by the Navy, 2 May 1863, at Boston, MA.
  • Commissioned USS Sunflower, 29 April 1863, at Boston, Acting Master Edward Sice in command
  • Sunflower joined the East Gulf Blockading Squadron at Key West in mid-May 1863
  • On 31 May, she seized schooner Echo and a cargo of cotton off the Marquesas Keys
  • On 13 June, she captured schooner Pushmatatta off Tortugas
  • On 27 August, Sunflower took schooner General Worth in the straits of Florida
  • On 6 October, Sunflower assisted USS Beauregard in seizing sloop Last Trial
  • On Christmas Eve 1863, she captured blockade runner Hancock near the lighthouse at Tampa Bay with a cargo of salt and borax
  • On 24 March 1864, Sunflower captured sloop Josephine in Sarasota Sound
  • Sunflower, with USS Honduras and USS James L. Davis, supported the capture of Tampa, FL., in a combined operation from 4 to 7 May
  • On 6 May the three ships captured sloop Neptune attempting to run the blockade
  • On 2 June, Sunflower landed three armed boats to destroy salt works at Tampa Bay
  • On 6 December 1864, of St. George's Sound she took Pickwick
  • On 30 March 1865, she and USS Somerset landed an expedition at St. Joseph's Bayou and destroyed salt works
  • Decommissioned, 3 June 1865, at Philadelphia and sold at auction on 10 August 1865
