  • Built in 1850 at New Albany, Indiana as a merchant tugboat
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Purchased in 1850 by Daniel Ladd, of Newport, FL.
  • Spray operated as far south as Cedar Key, FL., up the Apalachicola River to Columbus, GA. up the Suwannee River and west to New Orleans
  • Commissioned CSS Spray in 1863, LT. C. W. Hays, CSN
  • Spray operated in the vicinity of the naval station at St. Marks, FL. from 1863-65
    On 12 September 1863, USS Stars and Stripes attempted an unsuccessful attack on Spray on the St. Marks River
    In February 1864, Federal troops landed at St. Marks, their mission was to capture Fort Ward, Port Leon, and burn Spray, the mission failed
    6 March 1865, Spray participated in the Battle of Natural Bridge
  • CSS Spray was said to be the only Confederate States Navy vessel to operate exclusively in Florida waters
  • Spray surrendered to the Federal forces, 12 May 1865 Specifications:
