Sidewheel Steamer:
  • Built as the steamer SS Everglade in 1856, at Continental Iron Works, Greenpoint, N.Y.
  • Purchased by the State of Georgia in early 1861, converted into a gunboat for coast defense
  • Commissioned CSS Savannah by the Confederate States Navy, circa 18 January 1861, LT. J. N. Maffitt, CSN
  • Attached to the squadron of Flag Officer J. Tattnall, CSN
  • 5 and 6 November 1861, CSS Savannah in company with CSS Resolute, CSS Sampson, and CSS Lady Davis harassed Union forces preparing to attack Port Royal Sound, S.C.
  • Savannah assisted in the defense of Forts Walker and Beauregard, 7 November
  • In company with Resolute and CSS Sampson attacked Union vessels at the mouth of the Savannah River, 26 November 1861
  • Assisted in the attempted defense of Fort Pulaski on 10-11 April 1862
  • Reassigned as receiving ship at Savannah in 1862
  • Name changed to SS Oconee, 28 April 1863
  • In June SS Oconee loaded with cotton was dispatched to England to pay for much-needed supplies
  • Final Disposition, foundered in bad weather, 18 August 1863, a boat with four officers and 11 men was captured 2 days later; the remainder of her crew escaped Specifications:
