Moderator Tools/Watchlist - MediaWiki

The Moderator Tools team is currently working on making improvements to Special:Watchlist. As part of the WE1.3 Key Result (Increase user satisfaction of 4 moderation products by 5pp each), our team identified that there was an opportunity to make positive changes to the watchlist page.

Access 'Preferences'[edit]

One of the updates that we are making is adding a link to watchlist preferences available from the watchlist page. User story: As a user, when I'm visiting my Special:Watchlist page it would be good to know about the existence of Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-watchlist as these settings effect the behaviour of Special:Watchlist.

The 'Preferences' will be a link at the top section of the page. Additionally, the repeating 'Edit watchlist' button will be removed (in the skin Vector-2022) since there is an 'Edit watchlist' tab at the top of the page.

Setting default watchlist expiry time[edit]

Expiring-Watchlist-Items brought the ability to temporarily watch pages and files, instead of only having the option to watch indefinitely. Since the feature was deployed in 2020, there have been repeating requests from contributions to have the ability to set default watchlist expiries. The ability to change the default time for watched pages will be possible in 'Preferences', under 'Watchlist'.

The Moderator Tools team will be running an experiment where the 'group results by page' feature will be shown more prominently for a subset of contributors on their watchlist, recent changes and related changes pages for a limited amount of time. These pages are an important jumping-off point for contributors, but they have many actions and features that could overwhelm contributors and make it difficult to find existing edits they are interested in. There have been requests for features to help organize edits on these pages, but some of these features already exist. For the experiment the 'group results by page' feature will be brought forward (as it is one of the features that has been requested but already exists). The goal of the experiment is to see if those who enable the feature will be able to find and view more edits that they are interested in.

You can read more about the experiment on it's project page.
