On element content retrieval

Hi all,
First posting here.
Any idea how to extract the actual content from an actual xhtml
element?
I mean (and speaking in ipython) given the Node myelement below:
In [50]: my_element.toxml()
Out[50]: u'<td nowrap="">foo</td>'

How to I retrieve "foo" from my_element without having to pull any
regexp tricks?
Thanks in advance,
