Analyst: Nintendo Pocketing $50 on Each Wii
We've known for a while that Nintendo is the only console maker seeing a profit on each next-gen console it sells. But the company has not declared exactly how much profit it makes from each unit. An analyst in Tokyo estimates Nintendo is clearing about $50 on each Wii sold in America.
In an article from the Financial Times, Soichiro Fukuda, games analyst at Nikko Citigroup, guesses Nintendo's gross profit per console is 1,500 yen in Japan ($13). But in the U.S. and Europe the profits are considerably higher, as the Wii's price is higher and it comes bundled with Wii Sports. Mr. Fukuda estimates the profit margin for each console is $49 in the U.S. and $74 in Europe.
As Nintendo has sold approximately four million Wiis in the U.S. so far, if Mr. Fukuda's calculations are correct the console has generated around $200 million in ten months in this country alone. The Financial Times notes that Sony is not expected to start making a profit off PlayStation 3 hardware sales until 2009.
