Don Cheadle as FBI Agent Roberts

I'd be remiss in my preamble if I didn't say that Don Cheadle, in his fifteen-plus years of acting, has demonstrated time and again an ability to bring notable and affective characters to life. With supporting performances in films such as Colors, Rosewood, Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, and Devil in a Blue Dress (here recognized with a Best Supporting Actor Award from the National Society of Film Critics), plus TV work with Picket Fences, Lush Life and The Golden Palace, evidenced are the adages that persistence pays and eventually talent gets recognized.

In 1997's Boogie Nights, Cheadle turned in an unforgettable performance as actor Buck Swope. Add to this his roles in Volcano, Bullworth and Steven Soderbergh's Out of Sight – and let's not forget his portrayal of Sammy Davis, Jr. in HBO's The Rat Pack. In the past year, Cheadle teamed with Nicolas Cage in Family Man, and delivered a powerful performance as detective Montel Gordon in Soderbergh's Traffic. His forthcoming films include Rush Hour 2 and his third film for Soderbergh, the mega-cast Ocean's Eleven, starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, and the list goes on.

Truth and consequences in the interrogation room. Taking time out from his busy Ocean's Eleven schedule, Cheadle made the scene to discuss Swordfish, the high-tech actioner he'd spent a good part of last year working on. The interview took place early on Saturday morning, and upon meeting with Cheadle, his sense of humor was quickly disarming; a sublime aside to interview formality. I dig it. I mean, there's nothing better than a dry sense of humor, and you'll see he exercises it.

In this segment from the interview, Cheadle gives IGN FilmForce readers the lowdown on his character, Agent Roberts, the guy on the trail of the elusive Gabriel Shear (John Travolta). (Yes, the edited interview begins with the "Tell us about your character" question. Standard Q&A parlance, but I wanted to get his take.) Plus he discusses the types of roles he'd like to do in the future, working with Swordfish director Dominic Sena (Gone in Sixty Seconds) and, errr, slamming Hugh Jackman into the side of a car.
