The U.S. Energy and Employment Report (USEER) is a comprehensive summary of national, state and county-level energy jobs, reported by industry, technology, and region, with data on wages, demographics and employer perspectives on growth and hiring in the industry.
The USEER has been produced since 2016 to better track and understand employment within and across key energy sectors. The annual study combines a survey of over 40,000 employers with Bureau of Labor Statistics’ and other labor market data to produce a detailed estimate of employment and workforce characteristics across the energy sector.
Highlights from the 2024 ReportIn 2023, jobs in the energy sector reached 8.4 million, representing over 5% of all U.S. jobs. From 2022-2023, the sector experienced 3% growth, outpacing 2% job growth in the rest of the economy.
Employment increased across all five USEER energy technology categories, which include electric power generation; transmission, distribution, and storage; fuels; energy efficiency; and motor vehicles.
Looking across the energy sector, energy-related construction employment grew rapidly, at 4.5%, almost double the economy-wide construction employment growth of 2.3%. Energy-related manufacturing employment also increased by 3% in 2023, adding over 50,000 jobs.
