• By the end of April, India had over 2.5 million active cases, with an average of 2,000 deaths and 300,000 new cases reported daily. 
• There were concerns that these figures were underestimated. 
• On 30th April 2021, India recorded more than 3,500 fatalities and over 400,000 new cases in a single day.
• This led to a stop in all public gatherings and a lockdown with utmost strictness. 

2022

• In March 2022, India had 22,487 COVID-19 cases nationwide. 
• With 70% of the population having received at least one vaccine dose and 58.8% fully vaccinated, the country is progressing towards post-pandemic reopening. 
• The immunisation program in 2022 included children aged 12 to 15.
• State governments have been asked to remove most COVID restrictions, except for social distancing and masks. International flights resumed on 27 March 2022 after a two-year hiatus.

2023

• Prime Minister Modi called a meeting on 22nd March 2023, to discuss the country’s readiness for a potential new wave of infections caused by the SARS-CoV-2 strain XBB.1.16. 
• As of 23rd March, there was a 5-month high in active cases, coinciding with an ongoing H3N2 influenza outbreak. 
• Due to the increasing number of patients, many hospitals have reopened their Covid wards. 
• In August, a new Omicron subvariant called Eris was discovered in Maharashtra, with cases reported in several locations.
