In 2019, the horror genre gained a jewel from the dark comedy subgenre: Ready or Not. The film was a major critical and commercial success and its popularity continues over five years later.
Per Netflix, Ready or Not entered the Top 10 global movie charts at number six for the week between Nov. 11 and Nov. 17. The film has just premiered on the platform and it was a success. During its first week, it gathered 5.3 million views, which roughly translates into 8.6 million hours viewed.
RelatedReady or Not follows the story of a young woman who marries into a wealthy family, and, after the ceremony, she is invited to play a seemingly innocent game with her in-laws. Little did she know, the game's stakes are higher than she thought because the entire family's future rests on killing her as part of a creepy ritual to worship the devil.
The dark comedy horror stars a cast filled with familiar names, led by Samara Weaving in the leading role. The ensemble cast includes Adam Brody, Andie MacDowell, Mark O'Brien, Elyse Levesque, Henry Czerny, and Nicky Guadagni. Ready or Not comes from Radio Silence directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett with a script by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy.
Ready or Not was also a huge critical and commercial success. With a modest budget of only $6 million, the movie ended its theater run with a total of $56.7 million worldwide (via The Numbers). It also added $4.2 million from physical media sales.
When it comes to its reception, the comedy horror was very well received. On Rotten Tomatoes, Ready or Not holds an 89% approval score from the critics, leading to a Certified Fresh badge. The audience was also entertained, leading to a 78% rating.
Ready or Not Will Get a SequelReady or Not introduced a new special meaning to game night after its creepy twist about the family needing to kill the new addition to the family, or they would perish. The movie wraps its story by the end of the film, as (SPOILER ALERT) Weaving's character Grace is the only survivor of the bloody evening, with the entire Le Domas family dying in different ways or accidents. Even so, Ready or Not will receive a sequel.
