CBC projects Prime Minister Mark Carney will represent Nepean, a suburban section of west Ottawa, in the House of Commons.

This is the first time since the 1880s a prime minister has represented a riding in what's now Ottawa. Sir John A. Macdonald represented Carleton, as in the former county of Carleton, from 1882 to 1887.

Nepean's MP-elect started his career as an investment banker and has served as governor for the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. This will be his first stint as an MP.

Chandra Arya, who the Liberals cut as a candidate days before the campaign began, had won three straight elections in Nepean. Arya was also not permitted to run for Liberal leader in the field that included Carney.

Nepean's hub remains Barrhaven through the independent review that followed the 2021 census, though there was some ground ceded to Kanata and Carleton, where Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre ran in his longtime neighbouring riding.

Five candidates ran in Nepean this time. Conservative Barbara Bal came second.

Ottawa's Nepean riding no longer extends west of Highway 416. (Elections Canada)
