Myanmar communities suffering devastating loss after earthquake

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on 28th March, with the epicentre near Mandalay and Sagaing, leaving thousands of families devastated by the loss of their loved ones, homes, and daily essentials.

The death toll has risen to 3,145 and is sadly expected to increase further. The earthquake has had a catastrophic impact, and many communities are struggling to meet basic needs. Homes, buildings and bridges have collapsed, with people trapped beneath the rubble. Its reported that more than 3,000 people are injured while hundreds or people are missing.

Many people are still sleeping outside, too afraid to return indoors because buildings remain unsafe. Fuel supplies are running low, and access to many areas is difficult due to damaged roads, disrupted transport, and restricted bridge crossings. Power and water supplies remain unreliable, and most shops are still closed. Ongoing aftershocks continue to hinder rescue and relief efforts.

In Yan Naing in Sagaing, early signs of illness and suspected cholera cases have been reported. Overcrowded conditions and damaged infrastructure have increased disease risks, with limited access to clean water and sanitation. Many essential services have been disrupted, creating an urgent need for shelter, medical care, and basic household supplies. People are also suffering fractures and other trauma-related injuries, with limited access to medical treatment and surgical care.

With the monsoon season approaching, immediate action is essential. The recent earthquake has intensified an already dire humanitarian situation in Myanmar. According to UNOCHA before this disaster, nearly 20 million people – or one in every three people – were in need of humanitarian aid. The earthquake has magnified an already critical humanitarian needs – especially among people most in need of assistance.

The response is currently in the needs-assessment phase, with Caritas and the Church in Myanmar working closely with local communities to identify the most urgent priorities. Priority response areas include Mandalay, Sagaing and Bago Regions, as well as Shan and Kayin States. Assistance will likely focus on food, emergency shelter, essential supplies, cash assistance, water, sanitation and hygiene, and medical support including first aid kits.

“The situation on the ground is dire, and every moment counts. In the wake of an earthquake striking a nation already burdened by years of conflict, swift action becomes a matter of survival. We welcome the recent announcement of cessation of hostilities. Caritas in Myanmar is boldly stepping up, providing essential relief, shelter kits, clean water, high-energy food, and cash assistance to communities in urgent need. As we confront the vast scale of devastation and prepare for a prolonged recovery, any support we can get will make a big difference bringing hope to those who need it most,” said Christian Modino Hok, Humanitarian Director, Caritas Internationalis.

We’re in solidarity with the people of Myanmar. In the face of immense devastation, every bit of support can help bring relief and restore hope where it’s needed most.
