The paper examines the early history of the Kyrgyz people, tracing their mentions in various historical sources from Chinese texts of the Western Han dynasty through to the Tang dynasty and into the Byzantine period. An ambiguous portrayal of the Kyrgyz's ethnic composition emerges, with descriptions suggesting they might not be purely Turkic. Nonetheless, linguistic evidence supports their classification within the Turkic language family, and the text argues against a non-Turkic origin for the Kyrgyz based on an analysis of names and inscriptions from various sources.
