Two ends of a 10 gigabit Cat.6 ethernet cable with different connectors:
- Screw connector: M12 X-coded (aka. M12X) is a 12mm hollow metal screw containing a metal tube divided into a cross. The tube and the cross shields one pair of pins in each quadrant. A square peg (visible in the nearest quadrant) ensures correct orientation. The connector type is mechanically stronger than the 8P8C modular connector and doesn't have its latching pin weakness.
- Common 8P8C connector: As can be seen, this particular connector is partly of metal, for electrical shielding, but has a latching pin of plastic. As protection for the latching pin, sharkfins on each side of the latching pin protects it from hooking onto the cable and breaking off – a particular weakness of the connector type. Still, the pin has lost its stiffness from regular use and no longer latches. This shows as visible cracks in the plastic at the hinge point.
