Biography Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop

Narrator: Robb Weller. There are no fireworks or bombshells in this well-crafted docu — Lamb Chop does not blow the lid off what life with Shari Lewis is really like — but it provides an interesting insight into the comedian-ventriloquist who has been entertaining kids for more than 35 years.

While producer Nat Segaloff keeps the touch light, he succeeds in bringing out sides of the subject — as he did in the John Belushi seg of “Biography”– that add perspective to the story, instead of merely documenting it.

Family members and industry executives sing Lewis’ praises during the hourlong seg, with a healthy dose of clips from her TV offerings over the decades as a backdrop.

Clips from her recent children’s homevids offered by A&M Records also are used as a reminder of her continued marketability in an always fickle commercial environment.

But if there are any surprises in this installment of the informative “Biography” series, it is that Lamb Chop was not Lewis’ first partner.

Viewers will learn that Lewis initially experimented with wooden dummies before turning to the woolen mascot.

She is a multitalented hyphenate — pianist, violinist, actor, singer, writer , dancer — who also runs a seemingly unending gauntlet in a battle against what she describes as the lowering of standards in children’s TV programming.
