Collectible Card Game - TV Tropes

A Collectible Card Game (CCG), also known as a Trading Card Game (TCG), is different from a regular Card Game in that players don't use a standardized set of cards; instead, each player creates a deck using cards from their collection. Gameplay-wise, most CCGs are 1-vs.-1 battles where players use their cards to attack their opponent and bring their life to zero.

Most of these cards are sold in randomized packs — called "booster packs" — of 8–15 cards each, which players must buy in order to grow their collection and build an effective deck. (Of course, there's also the option of trading your unwanted cards for another players'.) Some CCGs offer non-randomized starter decks for new players, but their contents are usually less effective in order to encourage the purchase of booster packs.

A more recent variant is the Expandable Card Game (ECG), which removes the randomized aspect entirely but otherwise has the same mechanics. Examples include Summoner Wars or Fantasy Flight Games' Living Card Games. For convenience's sake, they're also categorized as CCGs on TV Tropes.

Although there were some precursors to the concept, the first true CCG was Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering, which to this day remains one of the Big Three of Collectible Card Games — the other two being Yu-Gi-Oh! and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. All three have sales numbers in the tens of billions as of 2025.

Deckbuilding Games are similar, with the key difference being that decks are formed during the game rather than before it.
