An Always Female, or Always Male, trope that is applied to the opposite gender.
While it's not always possible to pull this off, since some tropes are automatically seen in a different light when gender-inverted (like the Mama Bear and the Papa Wolf), making them an entirely different trope, others are only based on certain generic concepts associated with the gender, with nothing stopping the writers from playing with them, and even tropes where the gender specificity is due to involving certain sex-specific biological features can still be gender-inverted if Transgender characters are involved.
It might be Played for Drama, Played for Laughs as a character's unique quirk, or even not intended at all: For example, maybe a writer simply thought that Romani men are hot, and didn't even realize that Hot Gypsy Woman is a lot more common trope.
Conversely, it can be our own fault, due to Values Dissonance, as our trope definitions are largely based on Western and Japanese works, so it is possible that for example an Indian or Latin American show's characters can be only described with our vocabulary as "Like this trope, but male", even though it could be considered a different trope over there, but none of us knows enough about the culture to make a page for it. If the two tropes are indeed separate, they can have separate pages created.
In trope lists, it is often referred to as Rare Male Example and Rare Female Example.

- The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You: The Dulcinea Effect when Kishika rescues Rentarou from a group of delinquents harassing him for a set of keychains.
- In Haruka Nogizaka's Secret, Shute Sutherland is a Rich Bastard with a Boy Posse, sporting a Nobleman's Laugh.
- The relationship between Haruhi Suzumiya and Kyon is sometimes described as Belligerent Sexual Tension, but with a male Tsundere, and a female Jerk.
- In Is This A Zombie?, the male lead gets Magical Girl powers.
- In DNA², Kotomi is a rare female example of a Gass Hole with her frequent farting.
- In Iono the Fanatics, the protagonist is a young queen of a foreign country. She likes girls, too: she has 1000 courtesans. She goes so far as to call herself a "skirt chaser".
- In Nyaruko: Crawling with Love!, it is the heroine Nyaruko who is the perverted one and the male protagonist Mahiro punishes her for indecent behaviour by stabbing her with a fork, making her bleed and squick.
- In Saiyuki, three of the protagonists are a male version of The Three Faces of Eve: Innocent and not so bright Son Goku (the Child), patient House Husband Cho Hakkai (the Wife) and flirty stud Sha Gojyo (the Seductress).
- Shiro from K is a Moe Non-Action Guy who carries a Parasol of Prettiness, blushes constantly, and used to have long hair (and wears hair clips in multiple official art pictures).
- Tsukipro does this in so many ways. Like K, every unit has a male Team Mom; male characters wear skirts, hair decorations, and impossibly frilly clothes often; male performers model for womens' products without a second thought, etc.
- In The Weatherman Is My Lover, Amasawa is a Cosplay Otaku Guy.
- In Hetalia: Axis Powers Poland, Finland, Sealand and Prussia have many characteristics of a Plucky Girl. Albeit their versions are highly flamboyant (Poland), Finland, childish (Sealand) and/or narcissistic (Prussia) ones.
- And let's not forget that Germany and England are male versions of the Tsundere trope.
- Austria and Hungary meanwhile invert the Lady and Knight trope, with Hungary more often than not being the knight.
- Norway's hair-clip proves that it's not just the girls who are cuter with hair decs.
- Japan (fittingly) is a male Yamato Nadeshiko.
- Brock from the Pokémon the Series is Team Mom supreme. He cooks, cleans, heals injured Pokémon, and even Ash's mother praises his domestic skills ("He's a better seamstress than I'll ever be"). It's overt from his first episode, as we first see him taking care of his nine brothers and sisters in their parents' absence, and his stated goal is to be a Pokémon Breeder (one who raises/cares for Pokémon). Eventually he leaves to become a Pokémon Doctor.
- Kamille Bidan from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Dilandau Albatou from The Vision of Escaflowne are male versions of The Ophelia at some point of the story. They both get better. In the second case, Dilandau actually starts out as a girl.
- Ishida and arguably Yumichika from Bleach are also genderflipped Plucky Girls.
- There's more than one male Yamato Nadeshiko in manga and anime. Some examples are: Kiminobu Kogure from Slam Dunk; Shouma Takakura from Penguindrum; Japan (obviously) from Hetalia: Axis Powers; Haku from Naruto; Yukito Tsukishiro and Fujitaka Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura; Seiichiro Aoki from X/1999; Miyazaki from the Tokyo Babylon OAV, and arguably young!Subaru before it got worse; Taro Misaki from Captain Tsubasa; Tomohisa Kaname from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Rey from Saint Beast, etc.
- Misaki from Only the Flower Knows is an endearingly clumsy boy who initially behaves irritably, but gradually warms up to his love interest over time, acting more shy and easily flustered around him. Said love interest also finds his teary face adorable. Unsurprisingly, he's from a Boys' Love manga.
- Eco from Plus-Si is a male Kawaiiko.
- Night from Absolute Boyfriend is a Magical Boyfriend.
- Kuranosuke from Princess Jellyfish is a male Nerd Nanny, and a Manic Pixie Dream Guy.
- In Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Sirica wants to kill Meta Knight because he killed her mother (the normal version of the trope was played straight earlier by Knuckle Joe).
- Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail is The Big Guy of her Five-Man Band as she's one of the strongest female wizards of the title guild; notable because her team group is not an Amazon Brigade.
- Similarly to Erza, Kagura from Gintama is The Big Guy too due to her immense strength (she is a Yato, a clan of incredibly strong Amanto). And she's younger than the guys in her group.
- Codename: Sailor V has an example of Villains Want Heroines, and an example of Unlucky Everydudette.
- Kill la Kill:
- Happiness! (2005) is a rare series where a boy wears Proper Tights with a Skirt.
- In Fushigi Yuugi, Emperor Hotohori is very elegant and handsome swordsman with long hair - this makes him a male Lady of War.
- In Vandread, Bart is a Spaceship Boy.
- The self-proclaimed Great Teacher Onizuka is a Sensei-kun.
- In Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, badass Action Girl Balsa is the bodyguard of the young Prince Chagum, in a gender inversion of the classic Badass and Child Duo.
- Sho from Skip Beat! is a male Idol Singer.
- An episode of Hell Girl features a woman who killed her son out of greed and got away with it. She blackmails a girl who she thinks found out about it by holding the girl's dogs hostage. Unlike most examples, the woman also killed the boy's grandparents to get at their inheritance money. She gets what's coming to her in the end.
- Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! is a Magical Boy Warrior show, and also has male versions of Phoneaholic Teenager and Cute Sports Club Manager.
- Daily Lives of High School Boys and Tsuritama are Schoolboy Series. Ditto for You and Me and Seishun Kouryakuhon.
- I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying has a Yaoi Fanboy and a Deconfirmed Bachelorette.
- Miss Kobayashi of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (by the same author as the above) is a Salarywoman.
- Takeo Goda from My Love Story!! is basically a Stock Shojo Hero.
- Sanrio Boys (especially its web incarnation) is probably the closest thing there is to a Rare Male Example of an Otaku Surrogate, being about a group of pretty boys who like Sanrio products. Although to be fair, it does have a basis in reality. It also has a big helping of Schoolboy Series tropes as well.
- Saint Seiya has a male version of Frilly Upgrade, as the Bronze Cloths eventually become "Divine Cloths".
- In Tokyo Mew Mew, Tart has Boyish Pigtails.
- Yuri Danshi is all about an overzealous Yuri Fan who ships the girls in his school, similar to a typical Yaoi Fangirl character.
- Alois Trancy From Black Butler II is a disturbing male example of a Fille Fatale.
- In the Infinite Stratos second season OVA, Charlotte has a dream in which Ichika and she are Master and Servant Girl respectively.
- Magical Girl Ore is about girls becoming Super Gender-Bender Magical Boy Warriors.
- Fate/Apocrypha has Wholesome Crossdresser Astolfo, who is described as 'beautiful beyond compare', which could reasonably be taken to see him as the World's Most Beautiful Man.
- Komi Can't Communicate has an inversion of Panty Shot - while climbing with Komi, Tadano's pants slip down to the point where she can see the top of his underwear, and struggles to avert her gaze.
- WIND BREAKER has several of these in the main cast alone. The protagonist Haruka Sakura is a male Tsundere whose fighting style leans towards She-Fu, relying heavily on kicks, flips, and even leg locks. Akihiko Nirei is a cute clumsy boy who acts as The Heart of the group and doesn't do much if any fighting. Hayato Suo is an example of Beauty Is Never Tarnished as he's never seen taking a hit or even breaking a sweat in fights.
Comic Books
- Superhero's dads/paternal figures tend to be an example of Disposable Men.
- Spider-Man: Uncle Ben is the main reason why Peter Parker is a hero. It's not surprising why the sentence "with great power comes great responsibility" note Despite popular belief, he didn't say the phrase first in the comics. It was the narrator, probably Stan Lee , inspiring by his experience as a screenwriter for the U.S army world war II propaganda. It wasn't until the Sam Raimi film when the character himself said it is associated with the character, and he also serves as a reminder of why Spider-man doesn't follow his selfish desires and instead become an altruist who tries to do the right thing for others.
- Superman: In Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?, Pete Ross suffers a male version of Stuffed into the Fridge.
- Plastic Man: Plastic Man is a male version of a Navel-Deep Neckline.
- Battle Couple Green Arrow and Black Canary often gender flip Guys Smash, Girls Shoot, with Canary being the hand-to-hand expert and Arrow being, obviously, an archer, though they are both highly proficient in their opposing skill as well.
- Secret Wars (2015) has a male example of The Smurfette Principle — the Mighty Defenders team is made up almost entirely of female superheroes, with Spider-Man (a.k.a. Spider-Hero) as the only male on the team.
- In The Gatherers Saga, Proctor is an example of Man Scorned. In his world, he married Sersi, but when she lost interest in him, he killed her, and now wants to kill all Sersis from all alternate universes.
- In Al's Baby, Al becomes a male Pregnant Badass, and Al Jr. is a male Daddy's Little Villain.
- Sabretooth is a rare case of a manly character who's Pretty in Mink.
Fan Works
- In First Try Series, Tetsuo is a male example of Career Versus Man.
- My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fanfic Stallions On Strike is about the 1960s-70s feminist movement with stallions.
- Zastruga, a Rise of the Guardians fanfic, has Jack Frost playing the Boy in the Tower while being held by Pitch. As a further inversion, the "tower" in question stretches down into the ground, rather than rising above it.
- In Here, There Be Dragons, Bilbo is a Mafia Prince.
- God Save the Esteem has Cindy Brolsma as something like a female Kavorka Man.
- Hunting the Unicorn Cerebus Retcons Blaine Anderson into either The Ingenue or the Princess Classic. Despite also fitting the Prince Charming or Knight in Shining Armor archetypes, Blaine's optimism and naivete inevitably breaks him.
- Benedict (the hotheaded aggressive Out of Town), Tank (the smart easygoing Downtown) and Kidd (sarcastic style-oriented Uptown) of Pokémon Crossing are Town Boys.
- In Missing Linc, Rusty shows signs of being a Violently Protective Boyfriend when he threatens to beat up Papa Wheelie and Flat Tire upon learning that they threatened his girlfriend Polly.
- Code Geass: Paladins of Voltron: Has a grandmother and grandson Like Father, Like Son. Lelouch rebelled against Britannia for their mistreatment of others and himself, just like his grandmother did with the Galra Empire. In fact, if Lelouch's maternal grandmother actually is Krolia, then she is the one person in his family he most takes after, choosing to battle a seemingly insurmountable foe to improve the lives of others even though doing so would likely be to his detriment.
- In Chapter 4 of Run to You, Starscream has a male Lingerie Scene when he admires the lingerie he bought for his tryst with Skyfire.
- Solon in My Deepest, Darkest Secret is a rare male example for not only Dude Magnet but also My Brother Is Off-Limits.

- Blondie Johnson is a gender inversion of the Damn, It Feels Good to Be a Gangster! trope.
- Nate in The Devil Wears Prada is a male Wet Blanket Wifenote Girlfriend, actually per the screenwriter.
That was a 'girlfriend' part, really ... That's a part that a lot of women end up playing, the 'why aren't you home more,' the naggy wife.
- Janie Orlean in Don't Look Up is a female Trumplica, a vapid, bullying, corrupt, peroxide-blonde United States President who entered politics through the entertainment industry (in her case, it's implied that she was a former model) and whose every action reflects any number of criticisms that Donald Trump's opponents had of him. Given the film's cynical attitude towards the political establishment in general, however, her characterization also includes criticisms of a number of Trump's opponents, most notably Hillary Rodham Clinton, Trump's rival in the 2016 Presidential election.
- Ash from the Evil Dead series started out as a Final Boy.
- Candace in Final Destination 5 is a female Jerk Jock, a gymnast who chides Olivia for her weight despite Olivia being the film's main Ms. Fanservice character. (Olivia's response: "Sweetie, it's not fat. They're called tits.")
- In Ghostbusters (2016), Kevin is a male Sexy Secretary.
- In The Golden Child, the title character is a male example of a Barrier Maiden.
- Hairspray (2007) has female versions of Big Fun and Fat and Skinny, while Link and Tracy's relationship can best be described as Single Man Seeks Good Woman.
- In House (no, not that one), Roger is a male example of Navel-Deep Neckline, sporting an absurd deep V-neck sweater that exposes half of his chest.
- Harry Hart in Kingsman: The Secret Service is a Gentleman of War.
- In A Knight's Tale, Kate's husband serves as a male version of The Lost Lenore.
- Lawrence of Arabia:
- Lifeforce (1985) features a gender inverted take on the Dracula model by having a female vampire, the beautiful Space Girl, manipulating the desires and ultimately dominating Weak-Willed men while being aided by two male brides.
- Marvel Cinematic Universe:
- Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves has a gender-reversed instance of Outdoor Bath Peeping.
- The Room (2003) inverts The Unfair Sex by seeming to make out that the affair is all Lisa's fault, even though Mark was having it just as much as she was To be fair, Mark at least feels a pang of guilt about what's going on. But that's not enough to dissuade him until Johnny commits suicide.
- May Day (Grace Jones), from the James Bond film A View to a Kill, is a Scary Black Woman.
- X-Men Film Series:
- Mavis of Young Adult is a female version of The Slacker.
- Kisses for My President is a 1964 Comedy about a man (Fred MacMurray) whose wife elected the first woman President of the United States and he has to adjust to novelty of being the first "First gentleman".
Literature
- Ara the Handsome is a male version of Fairest of Them All.
- Kameron Hurley wrote Nyx in Bel Dame Apocrypha as a female version of the Action Genre Hero Guy. She felt that the Action Girl protagonists of Science Fiction and Urban Fantasy were too often written in what she felt were sexist ways that fixated on their gender, so she thought it would be a fun experiment to write an action heroine who really was a female version of a typical contemporary (late 2000s/early 2010s) male action hero, the only change being the pronouns used to describe her.
- Harry Potter:
- Holes has a rare female example of an Evil Prison Warden as the Big Bad. There is also, in the backstory, Kissin' Kate Barlow, a woman who takes revenge for the murder of her beloved by becoming a bandit.
- The Hunger Games has a gender-reversed instance of Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl, with Katniss as the brooding girl and Peeta as the gentle boy.
- Kate Crackernuts reads in part like a Gender Flipped version of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, with Kate getting to marry the prince as a Standard Heroine Reward.
- Archie Goodwin in the Nero Wolfe series is a rare male Sassy Secretary.
- The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System: Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong is an example of a Reborn As Villain Story.
- Snow White in His Glass Coffin is about an emotionally disturbed brother-sister duo. The brother is a Prone to Tears severely androphobic rape victim who's repeatedly noted to be So Beautiful, It's a Curse, and the sister is a stoic, sociopathic domestic abuser with extremely disturbing sexual proclivities.
- Victoria: A Novel of 4th Generation War features a rare male example of a Femme Fatale Spy, a stunningly attractive Camp Gay crossdresser who successfully passes as a gorgeous young woman and proceeds to seduce (and later blackmail) a senior political figure, literally catalyzing a civil war.
- Yingying's Biography: With Career Versus Man. Zhang has to choose between his lover Yingying or to go to the capital so he could have a job at the government. He chooses the latter, upsetting Yingying and ending with them to break up.
Live-Action TV
- Austin & Ally gender-flips the P.O.V. Boy, Poster Girl trope. Ally is the POV Girl, while Austin is the Poster Boy that drives the plot along.
- The Stripperiffic Triad sports gear in Battlestar Galactica (1978) are worn by men. Mainly Apollo, Starbuck and Boomer.
- In The Brittas Empire, Tim is a Clingy Jealous Guy to Gavin.
- One episode of El Chapulín Colorado featured a House Husband whose life was so similar to a House Wife's it was Played for Laughs. He complained about his wife wanting to watch a game instead of taking him to the movies like she promised; tells her "don't touch me" like some wives usually do on TV while mad at her husbands. When the husband of a former patient of his (he was a gynecologist before becoming a House Husband when his wife started making more money then he did) showed up needing help, Chapulin encouraged him, stating he needed to show men could work.
- CSI: Miami has an example of False Widower.
- CSI: NY uses Toplessness from the Back to show the audience Mac's healed bullet wound as he exits the shower in the opening of the season 9 premiere, "Reignited."
- CSI-verse as a whole uses the male version of Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Vegas has Gil, and later DB, New York has Mac, and Miami has Horatio.
- Renn Kousaka/Go-on Blue from Engine Sentai Go-onger, a near-perfect example of a male Yamato Nadeshiko and Team Mom.
- Matilda from Everything's Gonna Be Okay is a rare female example of an autistic character, and her characterization averts the Hollywood Autism trope.
- Fantasy Island invoked it in an episode where a secretary, feeling like a sexual bargaining chip for her boss (Quote: "What am I, a piece of meat?") is given a chance to be CEO with a male secretary. She ends up promising a client a dinner date with her secretary in exchange for a lucrative business deal. Cue the Ironic Echo about pieces of meat, coming from him.
- Manipulative bully "King" Ralph from Fresh Meat is a male version of the Alpha Bitch and Rich Bitch archetypes, complete with a Boy Posse.
- In Fringe, Peter Bishop is a Mad Scientist's Handsome Son who serves as a romantic lead for a female protagonist.
- Ray Drecker of Hung is a Single Dad Stripper.
- Interview with the Vampire (2022):
- Gigaro in Juukou B-Fighter inverts the Torpedo Tits trope with his Super Mode, from which he can shoot fireballs from his breasts.
- In "The Last Whiff of Summer", the fourth-season premiere of The Middle, Sue tries to go bad by, among other things, using her father's razor to shave her legs. This is followed by a Smash Cut to her sitting next to him watching TV with little bits of red-dot special on her legs, making her a female example of There Will Be Toilet Paper.
- One of the disposable sex workers from the Millennium (1996) pilot is a male prostitute that Frank saves from a harrowing live burial.
- In Mr. Robot, Elliot is a Rare Male Example of some of the tropes in his storyline that are usually applied to female characters. Most notable being his disdain towards men, being kidnapped on several occasions, dealing with several creepy male stalkers eg. Tyrell and Vera, facing Domestic Abuse and Attempted Rape and being a Final Boy after his friends (except Darlene) are murdered.
- In NCIS: Los Angeles, Deeks is the Manic Pixie Dream Boy.
- Oh, Doctor Beeching! has a gender-flipped version of The Missus and the Ex, with Jack as May's "missis", and Parkin as the ex.
- Donna Meagle of Parks and Recreation is a Kavorka Woman who has more sex than anyone else in the cast in spite of her unremarkable appearance and above-average weight.
- Power Rangers Operation Overdrive has a male example of My Biological Clock Is Ticking.
- Stargate SG-1 gender-flips Belligerent Sexual Tension with Vala Mal Doran as a Jerk with a Heart of Gold and Daniel Jackson as a Type B Tsundere.
- Star Trek: Picard:
- Zhat Vash agents Narissa and Narek employ two very different methods to carry out their mission; she likes to inflict pain and violence on her targets whereas he prefers to seduce and manipulate them, so they're an example of Women Use Violence, Men Use Communication.
- Although Elnor is a man, he receives the Beauty Is Never Tarnished treatment in every combat he engages in.
- Stranger Things: By Season Four, Lucas Sinclair's younger sister Erica becomes such an enthusiastic player of Dungeons & Dragons that she can plausibly be considered something of a male Fan Boy.
- Taxi Driver (2021): Kim Do-Ki is the Cute and Psycho Homme Fatale due to his Pretty Boy looks, which occasionally results in So Beautiful, It's a Curse.
- The Torchwood episode "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" has a male example of Drugged Lipstick.
- Bubbles in Trailer Park Boys is a Crazy Cat Man.
- In Veronica Mars, Wallace is a male Girl Friday, and Logan often acts as a male Femme Fatale.
- Wilma from Wendell & Vinnie could be seen as a female Casanova Wannabe; she constantly chases after men who have no interest in her and is generally depicted as being hopeless at getting a boyfriend, all Played for Laughs the way a man in her position would be.
- The White Queen:
- Richard of Gloucester is a Gaussian Guy when he saves Anne Neville's life at the Battle of Tewkesbury.
- King Richard III is a Drop Dead Gorgeous man after his corpse is stripped naked.

- One of the bosses in Azure Striker Gunvolt 2, Ghauri, is a male Adept who transform into a crystal-wielding fighter wearing Combat Stilettos. In his case, this is partly because bosses in that game follows Fairytale Motifs, and Ghauri's fairy tale is Cinderella who's well known for her glass slippers.
- All the Action Girls in Bayonetta wear Combat Stilettos, making Bayonetta's main opponent and Mirror Boss in the second game, the Masked Lumen, a notable male case as no other man in the games wears high heels.
- In Boktai, Sabata is a Dark Magical Boy.
- In the Borderlands 2 DLC Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, Mr. Torgue is accused by Lilith of being a bandwagon geek who only wants in on Tina's RPG campaign because it's trendy, a stereotype often associated with women gamers. He's then made to answer three question that only true geeks would know. He fails to prove his cred, but they decide to let him stay around as a questgiver when he breaks down in tears.
- In Chrono Trigger, there seems to be a gender-inverted variant of Wife Husbandry going on between Ayla and Kino. See character page for details...
- Duke Nukem: In the very first game, the title character had a few feminine traits, such as a pink shirt, a curly hairstyle and an interest in Oprah. From the second game onwards, he became more masculine and, by the third game, was a full-on Manly Man. In other words, Duke Nukem underwent a "Manliness Upgrade".
- Ensemble Stars!: Tori Himemiya is an example of a Tiny Tyrannical Guy.
- There are some males from Fire Emblem who are White Magician Dudes: Claud, Corple and his expy Sharlow from Seisen no Keifu, Sleuf from Thracia 776, Saul from Binding Blade, Moulder from Sacred Stones, and Rhys from Path of Radiance.
- Ghost of Tsushima Iki Island DLC has a female example of A Villain Named Khan in form of Ankhsar "The Eagle" Khatun, the shaman leader of Mongolian tribe that invades Iki Island. "Khatun" itself being the female equivalent of "Khan" rank in Mongol Empire, placing her in equal position to Khotun Khan, the Big Bad of main storyline himself.
- Kingdom Hearts:
- Mass Effect 2 features the rare male Green-Skinned Space Babe in the form of the drell. Kissable lips, pecs that can't be tamed, big eyes, and a generally kind demeanor. One of them is even rescued from a Distressed Dude situation by Liara, a regular Green-Skinned Space Babe (well, she's blue, but you get the gist).
- The game also has does this with the Thanks for the Mammary trope. If you play with a male Shepard and conclude Miranda's loyalty mission, she will thank you while roaming her hand over your chest and copping a feel of your pecs.

- The Order of the Stick has a male version of The Dulcinea Effect with Therkla, who decides to help Elan after gaining a huge crush on him.

Dr. Corso, who has been providing weaponized cyborg upgrades to a criminal gang who had been holding his wife hostage, learns that she was in on it and was cheating on him with the gang leader. The final scene has him lowering a drill towards the gang leader, with the very strong implication that he's going to kill him in a very gory way.

- Frank Butler gender inverted Quitting to Get Married when he retired from performing shortly after marrying Annie Oakley.
- If the United States ever elects a female or gay male president, then (unless the president is unmarried) the nation would have a first gentleman instead of a first lady, the title bestowed on the president's spouse who often takes a largely ceremonial role as one of the nation's leading socialites and influencers. Oddly enough, one of the two closest times the U.S. ever came to having a first gentleman involved Bill Clinton, a former president himself, when his wife Hillary ran for president in 2016, leading to a lot of jokes about a role reversal should she have won the election. It's not as much of an oddity at the state level, though, where many states have had female governors and, by extension, first gentlemen (as well as in Colorado, where Gov. Jared Polis became the first governor to be married to a same-sex spouse while in office in 2021), to the point where Wikipedia simply uses "first spouse".
