Post-Script Season - TV Tropes

This entry is trivia, which is cool and all, but not a trope. On a work, it goes on the Trivia tab.

"So, RPM, once more the intended finale to Power Rangers. It is rather amusing that that keeps happening; the series keeps reaching a natural endpoint... and then it keeps on going."

The result of a show being renewed after it has resolved its plot arc: the new season is forced to use the pre-existing setting and characters to tell a new story, often with a whole new premise.

The show in question may have already run its full course: the main plot concluded in an epic climax, the main characters' and the most prominent supporting characters' personal arcs were given closure, and all the loose ends were tied up with a pretty bow. Then the studio executives looked at the ratings and demanded more of the same.

Alternatively, the show had been Cancelled but the creators were given enough time to rearrange everything and bring the story to a proper conclusion. When the devoted fans responded with an outcry, the network reacted by approving another season, after all.

There's a good chance for a Post-Script Season to fail spectacularly. In the first place, the creators have to shoehorn these existing characters into a new premise that doesn't quite fit them; expect Character Derailment. Secondly, the show already had a Grand Finale, and it's going to be hard to top that. In the worst-case scenario, the creators may even decide to undo the original ending in order to stick to the initial premise. No wonder fans of other media get just a bit of dissonant feelings when they hear about how the creators threw away a perfectly good ending just because they wanted more.

However, not all Post-Script Seasons are unmitigated disasters. There have been a few creators who've handled their new seasons with care and presented material just as satisfying as (if not more than) the material that preceded. Also, if there are still lingering questions unanswered or plot points that have yet to be solved, this is the perfect place to fix that.

A form of Retool. Naturally turns the original ending into a Series Fauxnale. Sometimes results in Plot Leveling. Can suffer from Final Season Casting. Often results in Seasonal Rot and, if handled poorly, the show turning into a Franchise Zombie. Compare After Show, Sequelitis, and Trilogy Creep.
