I understand how you prefer not seeing a new tab opened when you launch Firefox. You can change this by going to Settings > Home Page > select "Last Tab".

If you're interested in switching the toolbar's position this can be done by following these steps: Tap Settings > Tap Toolbar > Tap Top or Bottom. Hope this helps!
