Clark Gregg Says Agents of SHIELD Is MCU Canon

Clark Gregg stands beside Agents of SHIELD and Marvel's other pre-Disney+ shows in the debate over whether they are canon or not, falling firmly into the former camp. Well before the MCU was expanding its reach with shows like WandaVision and Loki, Agents of SHIELD brought the franchise into television back in 2013. The series was created as a vehicle for Gregg's fan favorite Agent Coulson, and in its first few seasons, Agents of SHIELD found ways to connect to the MCU movies. As it went on, though, it drifted farther and farther away from the broader franchise.

As a result, there's been much debate over whether Agents of SHIELD is true MCU canon. The series ignored the world-changing events of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, but the early seasons' connections to the movies couldn't be ignored. However, this year's Disney+ shows have included some plot points that led many to further question Agents of SHIELD's place in the overall franchise. For example, WandaVision introduced the Darkhold, but in a vastly different way than Agents of SHIELD season 4. Then, Loki referenced Coulson's death and didn't say anything about his resurrection.

In Gregg's opinion, these storylines have done nothing to diminish his show's place in Marvel canon. While appearing on the Marvel Movie Minute podcast, Gregg first brought up WandaVision and its apparent retcon of Agents of SHIELD's own story. "I've seen places where people felt like SHIELD or something had been de-canonized by stuff that happened in WandaVision in ways I couldn't even quite follow, and I'm pretty adept at this stuff," he said. Gregg then went on to praise MCU head Kevin Feige for his commitment to the fans and how he stood by Agents of SHIELD earlier this year. Gregg said:

I read this comment the other day where someone said that, did this diminish Agents of SHIELD? And he [Feige] said, 'You know, I think you're really underestimating how powerful and passionate the fans of that show and the Netflix shows are and were,' and I would never underestimate that or them...

Though parts of Agents of SHIELD don't mix well with established MCU canon, Gregg's comments help reaffirm the idea that should Marvel want to bring back characters from the show, it can do so. Fans focused on every tiny detail of MCU continuity might take issue with it, but those who merely want to see Coulson or any of the Netflix characters again could be willing to overlook the missteps. There are currently rumors that Coulson or perhaps Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) will appear in Secret Invasion next year, which could clear up the question of Agents of SHIELD's canon status for good.

Until something like that happens, though, this debate will rage on for a good long time. As Gregg pointed out, fans of Agents of SHIELD have stood by the series even when others knocked it, and while the broader MCU may never acknowledge the brilliant characters introduced within it, there will always be passion for the show. It's nice to know that Gregg himself believes in Agents of SHIELD's place in canon, and hopefully some of its characters will get the chance to rejoin the MCU in the future.
