Born Elizabeth Marie Christine Kühnelt on Dec. 6,
1904Elissa Landi obtained the nickname of the "loneliest woman" because she seldom mingled with the film set at parties in Hollywood. She was so reticent that her seven-year marriage to John Cecil Lawrence, a London lawyer, became known in Hollywood only after they were divorced in 1935.
For a number of years, her name was linked romantically with various film celebrities until she married Curtiss Thomas in 1943.
Landi was married to Lawrence in 1928. He followed her to Hollywood two years later, but remained only one month, stating that he did not wish to become known as "Mr. Elissa Landi."
"I have little to offer the usual Hollywood group," she once said. "I adore solitude. I like to be alone, as far as human beings are concerned. I have six dogs and five cats to tag at my heels."
