UNITED STATES BENJAMAN PATENT OFFICE.
A. PIOKERING, OF WOONSOOKET, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF'TO NELSON JENOKES, OF SAME PLACE.
I BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,292, dated March 26, 1895.
Application filed May 8, 1894. Serial No. 510,534. (1% model.)
To all whom it may concern: 5
Be it known that I, BENJAMAN A. PICKER- ING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woonsocket, in the county of Providence and 5 State of 'Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots or Shoes; and I do'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and us the same.
My invention relates to improvements in boots and shoes; and it has for its general object to provide a thoroughly water-proof boot 1 5 or shoe embodying a leather outer or top sole.
' Other. objects and advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in connection with the annexed, drawiugs,in which- Figure l, is a transverse section taken through the foot portion of a shoe embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a plan viewof the metallic sole. Fig. 3, is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 4, is an enlarged detail longitudinal section illustrating one of the barbs or prongs of the metallic sole clinched upon the outer sole.
In carrying out my invention and forming my improved boot or shoe, I first place an insole A, of rubber, or other water-proof material, upon a last, after which the leg lining B, is brought around and lasted to the edge of the insole as shown at a, and a filling sole 0,
is interposed between the edges of the leg lin-- ,5 ing and securely connected by cement to the under side of the insole. A canvas sole D, is then cemented to the filling sole 0, and leg lining B, after which the sole E, of sheet metal is applied. This sole E, is of the same gen- 0 eral configuration as the bottom of a shoe and it is provided with a'series of depending barbs or prongs as F, which are struck from it and are designed to take through and effect a connection of the vamp lining G, and vamp H, 5 with the insole as shown in Fig. 1. When the vamp lining and vamp have been brought over the prongs or barbs F, they are connected together and to the metallic sole by cement, after whicha filling sole or plurality of filling soles I, are placed within the opening I), of the sole E, and between the edges of the vamp lining and vamp, and are connected together and to the bottom of the canvas sole D, by cement or the like. After the vamp lining, vamp and the filling sole or soles have been secured in position as described, a leather sole J, is driven upon the prongs or barbs F, and said prongs or barbs are clinched against its under side as shown at 0, so as to securely-hold it, when a leather top sole K, can be connected by the pegs 11, or the like; care beingtaken not to have the pegs enter the rubber insole. Thus a perfectly water tight boot embodying outer or'top soles of leather is formed, and one which is capable of long resisting wear and rough usage, and which may be easily repaired when the top sole is worn out by simply removing such sole and pegging a new top sole upon the sole J.
Having described my invention, what I .70 claim is- 5 The herein described waterproof boot or shoe comprising an insole A, of waterproof material, a leg lining lasted over said sole, a filling sole 0, interposed between the edges of the leg lining and connected to the bottom of the insole, a vamp lining and a vamp connected together, an outer sole J, the sheet metal plate E, having the depending barbs F, struck from it and also having the opening b, said plate being interposed between the vamp lining and the leg lining and filling sole 0, and the barbs F, being passed through the vamp lining, vamp, and outer sole J, and clinched or turned upon the outside of said sole, a filling soleor plurality of filling soles arranged in the opening I), of the metallic plate E, and interposed between the edges of the vamp lining and vamp and the top sole connected to the sole J, substantially as and for the pur- 9o pose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMAN A. PICKERING.
