In recent versions of Debian (and Ubuntu), 64bit and 32bit libraries can coexist on the same system. What's the output of "dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_MULTIARCH" on your system? It should print out "x86_64-linux-gnu". setup.py supports multiarch for some time, see PyBuildExt.add_multiarch_paths(). Christian
