I actually discovered in this thread that I've been misreading PEP 7 for going on 7 years now - I thought the brace usage example *did* use "} else {" (mainly because I write my if statements that way, and nobody had ever pointed out to me that the C style guide actually says otherwise). So I'm happy enough with leaving PEP 7 alone and letting the stylistic inconsistencies stand (even going forward). I agree in these days of auto-indenting editors and automated test suites, the maintenance benefits of always requiring the braces are significantly less than they used to be.
