Hey Yeswanth Students who get involved with the projects they plan to work with early have a definite edge over students who don't, so certainly get involved now. While I would highly encourage you to get involved with python-dev (core projects are top in line), you may also want to consider 3rd party libraries for Python 3 or to help a Python 2 library port to 3. Python-dev has a list of bugs. Pick one and start, submit patches, join IRC (#python-dev on irc.freenode.net) and see if you can find someone who can help you get started.
