Apparently not. In Python 3.2:

>>> '\N{KANNADA SIGN JIHVAMULIYA}'.isidentifier()
True
$ curl -s  http://www.dcl.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/home/loewis/table-3131.html|
grep JIHVAMULIYA
