The bsddb module is built separately from Python within FreeBSD's ports. I
think Apple did the same for Mac OS X.

ports/databases/py-bsddb
ports/databases/py-bsddb3

So for a fair number of systems the 'bsddb' module being an external
package/dependency is already true.
