FWIW, here is what other tools give as error message in similar cases:

gcc: subscripted value is neither array nor pointer
g++: invalid types ‘double[int]’ for array subscript
javac: array required, but X found
ruby: undefined method `[]=' for 1:Fixnum (NoMethodError)
