Actually the distinction is very clear:

 >>> isinstance(pc, _PrivateClass)
True
 >>> fntllc = FunctionNamedToLookLikeClass()
 >>> isinstance(fntllc, FunctionNamedToLookLikeClass)

TypeError: isinstance() arg 2 must be a class, type, or tuple of classes 
and types
