The original goal of the -U command line (find out what happens if all strings were unicode) still remains at the moment. It may be sensible to remove it when Python 3 has solved the issue in some other way, but then, removing it may cause unnecessary breakage, so it can just as well stay throughout 2.x. Regards, Martin
