As long as the semantics are based on if-elif, you have to support

    if    (optimizable)
    elif (has a side effect)
    elif (optimizable)
    elif (not optimizable)
    elif (optimizable)
    elif (has a side effect)
    elif (optimizable)

where the four "optimizable" cases are actually in four separate dictionaries.
