You have a point, but I think that for external libraries with a large following the best we can do is set things up so that it's both PEP8 compliant *and* has aliases to the existing setup. From my POV, it's critical to encourage people to switch to the stdlib version if possible (but often writing code that works with the external library is the only way to support multiple Python versions).
