Thank you for your serious consideration of my proposal and for your 
suggestions!
I think that, according to Duncan Booth's suggestion, I will write, for 
my own use, a function which gets start and length and returns a slice.
Even though it wasn't accepted, making the patch and participating in 
the discussion was quite fun. And don't worry, I will continue to use 
Python - it's still the best computer language I know...
