This strikes me as plausible for the following reason: int() and list(), for instance, instead of raising TypeError as some would expect or even want, return their additive identity elements. You are proposing that min() and max() return their respective comparitive identity elements. There will not, however, be a literal for these, nor a builtin name. Terry J. Reedy
