I thought it was going to be easier just to scan setup.py, and say, "ah, yes, right there; it'll compile X right after Y and just before Z, and ..." That you, too, are other-than-entirely-certain about how errors are handled--well, I don't know if that's a good thing, or bad. So is there no one who's expert with the Makefile? Shall I dig in myself and see what it'll need to work correctly and compre- hensibly?
