Since people writing backward-compatible code will want to check for the existence of such a function anyway, it should not be a significant drawback to provide it only on platforms that are easily supported. And, once you've written an example, others who have more familiarity with those other platforms might be more motivated to supply patches adding the feature to those as well. :)
