As a side note, I'm currently working on wrapping ICU as a Python 
module, which would give you reliable cross-platform locale support, 
independent of the system locale.  Incidentally, ICU is what Apple uses 
in MacOS X anyhow...

This module will not be ready before 2.4... :-(
