Something I'm still acutely aware of despite not using Emacs for years is how much trouble it would be to teach python-mode.el about a unique new way to continue a statement. Parens would "just work". Ditto for IDLE, and tokenize.py, etc etc etc etc. I bet tools parsing import statements for *content* (like pychecker, and perhaps pyclbr.py -- the others mentioned are just looking at form) would need modification regardless, though.
