I cvs up'd, applied your patch, reconfigured and recompiled, and ran your test script. It passed. Created sample Unix, DOS, and Mac text files of my own, and convinced myself that "U" does the right thing. Running the whole test suite now, haven't seen any failures yet. Nice work!
