Thanks for all feedback on the previous version. This one supports both immortal interned strings created with PyString_InternInPlace and mortal interned strings created with the new function PyString_Intern. Places that might affect compatibility still use immortals but most interned strings are now mortal. This version, like the previous one, does not support indirect interning of strings.
