One possible difference between your and my installation is that you probably followed the Linux instructions, whereas I followed the Solaris instructions (even though my system is Linux). I did so because of martin@mira:~/work/python/dist/src> getconf LFS_CFLAGS -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 So getconf works fine on Linux, as well, and DTRT.
