In 2.2, the C API for the garbage collector is different from 2.1, so backporting this would require extra work. Also, you'd probably have to add GC to frames as well to reap the benefits. To me this particular problem feels like a bug that's almost a feature (everybody knows about it, it's documented, etc.), and I think we'd be better off not fixing this in 2.1.2. --Guido van Rossum (home page: http://www.python.org/~guido/)
