Actually, one of my colleagues informed me that this spam is in fact *very old* (after I ROTFL'd rather loudly reading the Dilbert comic featuring the Nigerian spam a mere week after getting the spam myself :) Scott (my colleague, not Adams) remembers first getting it by fax, 15 years ago, and again several years later. And not just one fax, but every single fax in the company, and lots more outside of the company. Apparently the telephone operator issued a warning to all customers not to respond to the fax.
