Why don't you use mxDateTime ? It provides a platform independent
layer on top of all the C lib confusion underneath.

Also, the representable time range is 

	-5851455-01-01 00:00:00.00 - 5867440-12-31 00:00:00.00

... should cover most people's needs ;-)
